Karteros Beach
Distance from Heraklion Airport: ~8 km
Driving time: 10–15 minutes
If you have just landed at Heraklion Airport and want to see the sea as soon as possible, Karteros is one of the easiest options.
The beach is long, sandy and spacious, with plenty of room to spread out. Beach bars and cafés are close by if you need them. If not, simply bring a towel and enjoy a relaxed afternoon by the sea.
Because it is on the north coast, Karteros can be affected by the summer winds. On calm days the sea is great for swimming, while windier days attract visitors who enjoy water sports.
A small local tip: If you are visiting in July or August, going earlier in the day usually means calmer water and easier parking.
Agia Pelagia Beach
Distance from Heraklion Airport: ~25 km
Driving time: 30 minutes
Agia Pelagia is one of those beaches that works well for almost everyone.
The beach sits inside a protected bay, which means the water is often calmer than many other beaches on the north coast. Families appreciate the easy access and shallow areas, while couples often enjoy the combination of swimming, restaurants and the relaxed atmosphere of the village.
You can spend the whole day here without needing to move the car again. Everything is close: cafés, tavernas, shops and places to rent umbrellas.
The road down to Agia Pelagia is slightly steep in places, but the views as you approach the village are part of the experience.

Ligaria Beach

Just a few minutes from Agia Pelagia, Ligaria offers a quieter alternative.
The small bay is protected from the stronger winds and is known for its clear water. It is a good choice if your idea of a perfect beach day is swimming, relaxing and spending time in the sea rather than looking for a busy beach atmosphere.
Because the beach is smaller, it has a more intimate feeling, but that also means it fills up faster during peak season.

Psaromoura Beach
Distance from Heraklion Airport: ~23 km
Driving time: 25–30 minutes
Psaromoura is a small cove near Agia Pelagia with a different character from the larger organised beaches nearby.
The water is clear, the surroundings are beautiful and the rocky areas make it a good choice for visitors who enjoy snorkelling. It is not a beach where you go looking for endless facilities—it is more about swimming, relaxing and enjoying the scenery.
Because it is smaller, it can feel busy during the middle of the day in high season. Still, many visitors prefer it because it feels a little more natural.

Palaiokastro Beach
Distance from Heraklion Airport: ~15 km
Driving time: 20–25 minutes
Palaiokastro is a great option if you want something close to Heraklion but away from the busier tourist areas.
The beach is surrounded by rocky cliffs and has a more local atmosphere. The water is clear, and the area is popular with people who enjoy swimming and snorkelling.
You will not find the same number of organised facilities as Agia Pelagia or Karteros, but that is exactly why many visitors enjoy it. It feels like a simple place to stop, swim and spend a relaxed afternoon.

Choosing the Right Beach for Your Day
