Landing at Heraklion Airport is usually easier than most first-time visitors expect. During the summer it gets busy, especially when several flights arrive close together, but don’t let that put you off. Within a short time you’ll be on your way, and your holiday can properly begin. This guide answers the questions we hear most often and will help you get from the airport to your destination with as little stress as possible.
Before You Leave the Terminal
You don’t need to spend much time inside the airport, but it’s worth checking a few things before heading outside.
- Withdraw some cash if you plan to visit small villages or local cafés during your trip. Cards are widely accepted, but cash is still useful in some places.
- Connect to the free airport Wi-Fi if you need directions, want to message your accommodation or check your route.
- Need a local SIM card? If you’re travelling from outside the EU and need a local SIM or data package. Use the information Point to find the closest mobile service provider.
- Buy a bottle of water. During July and August, the temperature outside can be significantly higher than inside the terminal.
Once you’re ready, follow the signs towards the exit.
Getting Away from the Airport
There are several ways to continue your journey, and the right one depends on where you’re staying and how much of the island you plan to explore.
Taxi
Taxis wait just outside the arrivals area and are a convenient choice if you’re staying in Heraklion city or nearby.
A good option if:
- You’re staying in Heraklion.
- You’re only visiting for a short time.
- You don’t plan to travel around the island.
Keep in mind that queues can build up during busy arrival times.
Public Bus
The public bus stop is located opposite the terminal and offers regular services to Heraklion city centre.
It’s an inexpensive option if your accommodation is in the city.
If you’re staying in places like Hersonissos, Stalis, Malia or Agia Pelagia, you’ll usually need to continue with another bus or a taxi.
Private Transfer
Many hotels offer private transfers.
If yours does, it’s an easy way to reach your accommodation without worrying about directions.
The trade-off is flexibility. If you decide to explore the island later, you’ll still need to arrange transport.
Rental Car
We get asked one question almost every day:
“Do I really need a rental car in Crete?”
The honest answer depends on the kind of holiday you’ve planned.
If you’re staying in Heraklion city and don’t intend to travel very far, you’ll probably manage without one. Public buses, taxis and organised excursions cover many of the main attractions.
Things change once you decide to explore beyond the city.
One thing surprises many first-time visitors: Crete is much bigger than it looks on a map. Some of the beaches people fall in love with, the mountain villages they discover by chance and the family-run tavernas they remember long after the holiday aren’t always easy to reach by public transport.
Having your own car simply gives you more freedom. If you spot a quiet beach, a roadside viewpoint or a village that wasn’t in your original plans, you can stop and enjoy it without worrying about the next bus.
Where to Find the Car Rental Companies
One of the questions we hear most often is:
“Where do I collect my rental car?”
The answer is simple.
Most car rental companies at Heraklion Airport operate from the dedicated rental area directly opposite the arrivals terminal. After leaving the building, you’ll only need to cross the road to reach the rental offices. The area is clearly signposted and easy to find.

Driving times are only a guide and can vary during the busiest weeks of summer.
One thing you’ll notice quite quickly is that driving in Crete often feels more relaxed than the numbers suggest. The main road follows much of the north coast, so even a simple journey can come with views of the sea or the mountains. Don’t be in a rush—the drive is part of the experience.
Do You Actually Need a Rental Car?
The honest answer?
It depends on the kind of holiday you’ve planned.
A rental car is probably worth it if you:
- Want to visit several beaches.
- Plan to explore villages and local tavernas.
- Are travelling with children.
- Like having the freedom to stop whenever something catches your eye.
- Are staying outside Heraklion city.
You may not need one if you:
- Plan to spend your whole holiday in Heraklion city.
- Have booked organised excursions every day.
- Are only visiting for a day or two.
Many visitors arrive thinking they’ll decide later, but during the busiest weeks of summer, popular vehicle categories can sell out quickly. If you know you’ll be exploring the island, booking in advance usually gives you a better choice of cars and a smoother start to your holiday.

Check in, enjoy a relaxed meal and settle into the slower pace of island life. Save places like Knossos or longer road trips for the following morning, when the temperature is lower and the roads are generally quieter.
