You don’t have to drive across Crete to find a good sunset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Around Heraklion, there are several places where you can finish the day by the sea, above the coast or right in the city. The trick is knowing what kind of view you want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One thing is worth knowing first: Heraklion’s north coast doesn’t face directly towards the setting sun, so you won’t always get the classic \u201csun disappearing straight into the sea\u201d view from every beach. The shape of the coastline and the hills around it can actually make some spots more interesting than a completely open beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here are a few places we’d consider when the evening light starts getting good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You don’t need a rental car at all for this one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The old Venetian harbour is one of the easiest places to watch the evening change in Heraklion. You can walk out along the long harbour mole towards Koules Fortress<\/strong>, with the marina and old shipyards behind you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The city, harbour and fortress give you much more to look at than an empty horizon. As the light fades, the stone of Koules changes colour and the harbour gradually starts to light up. The local tourism organisation specifically recommends the harbour mole as an evening walk around sunset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is probably the best option if you want sunset to be part of an evening in the city rather than a separate excursion. Take a walk first, find somewhere for a drink afterwards and stay around for the few minutes after the sun disappears. The blue hour over the harbour can be just as interesting as the sunset itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you want something completely different, drive uphill to Rodia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The village sits above the coast west of Heraklion, giving you a broad view across the Gulf of Heraklion. From up here, you aren’t watching the sunset from the beach. You’re watching the entire landscape change colour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That makes Rodia particularly good for an evening when the sky is more interesting than the sun itself. You can see the coastline below, the city in the distance and the surrounding hills, rather than having your view limited to the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There are also places to eat in the village with terraces overlooking the area. Recent visitor reviews specifically mention the views and sunset atmosphere from restaurants in Rodia. If you have a car, this is one of the easiest ways to turn sunset into a proper little evening drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fodele is a good choice if you want the sunset to come with a beach. The beach is around 26 km northwest of Heraklion and sits inside a bay between Cape Stavros and the hill of Kastelos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It isn’t a completely open western-facing beach, so don’t arrive expecting the sun to drop directly into the sea in front of you. What makes it worthwhile is the combination of the coast and the surrounding hills. The light catches the landscape as the afternoon fades, and the beach gives you somewhere easy to sit and wait for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There are also caf\u00e9s and tavernas around the beach, so you don’t need to leave immediately after the sun goes down. Another option is to combine the beach with a visit to Fodele village<\/strong>, which sits a few kilometres inland in a greener valley. That gives you a nice change of scenery before heading back towards Heraklion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Agia Pelagia is another easy option when you want to finish a beach day with sunset. The bay is around 24 km from Heraklion and has a wide selection of caf\u00e9s, restaurants and places to sit by the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The main beach isn’t necessarily the place we’d choose if your only goal is photographing the exact moment the sun disappears. Instead, look at the surrounding higher ground and viewpoints around the bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From above, you get a much more interesting composition: the coastline below you, the sea stretching away and the hills catching the last light. This is also one of the easier options if you’re already spending the afternoon in the area. You don’t have to turn sunset into a separate trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you don’t want to drive far, Palaiokastro<\/strong> is worth considering. The small coastal settlement is only around 8 km from Heraklion, with a pebble beach beneath the remains of a Venetian fortress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is a much smaller setting than Agia Pelagia or Fodele. That can be an advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You have the old fortress above the coast, the sea below and a few tavernas and caf\u00e9s where you can stay afterwards. The beach itself faces east, so this isn’t the place to choose if you specifically want the sun setting over the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Instead, think of it as a late-afternoon coastal stop<\/strong> where the surrounding cliffs, fortress and sea become part of the evening light. And if the sunset isn’t spectacular, you’ve still had a swim and seen somewhere with a bit of history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes the best sunset plan is the one that requires almost no planning. Ammoudara stretches along the coast immediately west of Heraklion, so it is one of the easiest places to reach from the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It’s a long, developed beach with plenty of places to sit, eat or have a drink. The sunset itself depends heavily on the season, coastline position and weather, so don’t expect a perfect horizon every evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But Ammoudara has one big advantage: you can decide at the last minute<\/strong>. If you’ve finished exploring Heraklion and the evening looks promising, head west. You don’t need to build an entire excursion around it. Sometimes that’s all you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It depends on what kind of evening you want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n City evening:<\/strong> go to the Venetian Harbour and walk towards Koules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Panoramic view:<\/strong> head up to Rodia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sunset combined with a beach:<\/strong> try Fodele or Agia Pelagia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Quick coastal escape:<\/strong> Palaiokastro is very close to Heraklion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The easiest last-minute option:<\/strong> Ammoudara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And don’t be too concerned about finding the one \u201cperfect\u201d viewpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The best sunset can change from one evening to the next. Clouds, haze and the position of the sun all make a difference. A clear sky may give you a clean horizon, while a few clouds can produce much more interesting colours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Don’t arrive at the exact time your weather app says \u201csunset.\u201d You’ll miss the best part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Try to get there around 30\u201345 minutes beforehand<\/strong>. That gives you time to find somewhere comfortable, walk around and watch the light change rather than arriving just as the sun is disappearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The last part of the evening can be particularly nice in Crete. The temperature starts to drop, the beaches become quieter and the harsh midday light disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And if you’re driving, there is another reason not to rush. The road back can be part of the evening too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is where having a rental car can make these little evening trips more enjoyable. You don’t necessarily need a full-day excursion. Leave Heraklion in the late afternoon, drive somewhere nearby, have a swim or a meal, watch the sunset and come back when you’re ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You can also choose based on the weather. If the coast is hazy, perhaps a higher viewpoint around Rodia will give you the better view. If the sky looks clear over the sea, stay closer to the coast. There is no reason to commit to one spot hours in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Just leave yourself enough time to get there safely before the light starts changing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Don’t leave when the sun disappears<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n One of our favourite pieces of advice for sunset in Crete is very simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Stay for another 15 minutes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The moment when the sun disappears isn’t necessarily the most colourful part of the evening. The sky can continue changing after sunset, while the surrounding hills, buildings and sea become darker silhouettes. In places like the Venetian Harbour, the transition into evening is particularly enjoyable because the lights of the city and fortress gradually become part of the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So don’t take one photograph and immediately walk back to the car. Sit down, have a drink, watch the harbour lights come on.
