But if you are interested in ancient Crete, stopping at Knossos means seeing only one part of a much bigger story.

Around Heraklion, there are Minoan villas, ancient cemeteries, sanctuaries and later Greek and Roman cities that are much less talked about. Some are only a short drive from the city, while others make a good half-day trip through the countryside.

The best part is that many of these places feel completely different from Knossos. There are no reconstructed palace rooms or large groups moving from one section to another. Instead, you get quieter archaeological sites where you can spend time looking at the landscape and imagining what was here thousands of years ago.

Here are some of the archaeological sites near Heraklion worth knowing about.

Tylissos: Minoan houses in the hills

West of Heraklion, near the village of Tylissos, you can visit the remains of a Minoan settlement dating mainly from the second millennium BC.

What makes Tylissos interesting is that you are not looking at another palace. The site includes several large Minoan houses, with courtyards, storage areas and architectural details that give a glimpse into how people actually lived.

The finds from Tylissos also tell us something about the wealth and status of the people who lived there. The Heraklion Archaeological Museum contains impressive objects from the site, including large bronze vessels and bronze figurines of worshippers.

Tylissos works particularly well if you want to combine archaeology with a drive through the villages and hills west of Heraklion. It feels much more like discovering part of the countryside than visiting a major tourist attraction.

Fourni: An ancient cemetery hidden among olive trees

Near Archanes, on a hill known as Fourni, there is one of the most important prehistoric cemeteries in Crete.

The cemetery was used for an extraordinarily long period, from around 2400 to 1200 BC. Archaeologists have found a large number of tombs and burial remains here, making Fourni particularly valuable for understanding how burial practices changed over many centuries.

And the setting is part of what makes the place memorable.

Instead of a large archaeological complex surrounded by modern development, Fourni sits among olive trees and vineyards above the Archanes area. You can easily combine a visit with time in Archanes itself, which makes this a nice option for a slower day outside Heraklion.

If Knossos shows you the world of the Minoan palaces, Fourni gives you a glimpse of what happened around them after people died.

Amnisos: Ancient Crete by the sea

For something completely different, head east from Heraklion towards Amnisos.

The area was inhabited from the Minoan period, and archaeological remains include a Minoan complex known as the Mansion of the Lilies. The settlement continued to be used after the Minoan period, while a sanctuary dedicated to Zeus Thenatas was established in the area during the Archaic period.

Amnisos is interesting because of its position. This was not an isolated inland settlement. It was a coastal place connected with the sea and with the wider network of Minoan Crete.

You can also make the visit part of a relaxed drive along the coast. It is the kind of stop that works well when you don’t want your entire day to revolve around one archaeological site.

Nirou Chani: A Minoan villa that most visitors miss

Another lesser-known site is the Minoan villa at Nirou Chani, east of Heraklion.

The wider coastal area around Kokkini Hani and Nirou Chani contains archaeological evidence from the Minoan period, including the remains of a substantial villa.

It is easy to overlook this part of Crete when the main focus is Knossos, but that is exactly why it is worth knowing about. The archaeological landscape around Heraklion was much more extensive than a single palace. Villas, settlements, cemeteries and coastal sites were all part of the same wider world.

The Ministry of Culture lists both the Minoan villa at Nirou Chani and the archaeological area of Amnisos among the sites under the Ephorate of Antiquities of Heraklion.

Agia Triada: A Minoan royal villa in the countryside

If you are prepared to drive a little farther south, Agia Triada is one of the most rewarding additions to a day exploring ancient Crete.

The site contains the remains of a Minoan royal villa in the Messara area. It is closely connected with the Minoan world of Knossos and Phaistos, but the atmosphere is completely different.

This is also where some of the most famous Minoan objects discovered in the area came from. The Heraklion Archaeological Museum houses the famous Harvester Vase from Agia Triada, dating to around 1500–1450 BC, as well as the extraordinary painted Hagia Triada Sarcophagus from a nearby necropolis.

The sarcophagus is particularly fascinating because its painted scenes show funerary rituals, offerings and religious imagery. It gives you a very different picture of Minoan and post-palatial Crete from the one most visitors get at Knossos.

Agia Triada also works well as part of a larger southern Crete day, especially if you want to combine archaeology with villages, local food and a slower drive through the Messara countryside.

Gortyna: When Crete became a Roman city

Not everything around Heraklion is Minoan.

About 45 kilometres south of Heraklion, the archaeological site of Gortyna takes you into a much later chapter of Cretan history. The ancient city flourished through the Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods and eventually became an important Christian centre.

One of its most famous features is the Gortyn Code, an extensive collection of ancient laws inscribed on stone. The site also contains the Roman Odeon, temples, the remains of an ancient city and the Basilica of Saint Titus.

Gortyna is a good reminder that Crete’s history did not stop with the Minoans. Thousands of years of different cultures followed, and the island continued to be an important place long after the great Minoan palaces had disappeared.

So, which one should you visit?

That depends on what you want from the day.

Short trip from Heraklion: Tylissos and Amnisos are good choices.

Minoan history combined with a village: Fourni works nicely with Archanes.

For a deeper Minoan day trip: Agia Triada is worth the longer drive, particularly if you are already heading towards the Messara area.

For Greek and Roman history: Gortyna is the obvious choice.

And if you are staying in Heraklion, you don’t have to choose between Knossos and these places. You can visit Knossos on one day and use another day to explore some of the smaller archaeological sites around the island.

Why having a car makes a difference

This is one of those parts of Crete where having a car changes what you can realistically see.

The less famous archaeological sites are spread around the countryside rather than concentrated in one tourist area. A car lets you visit a site for an hour, stop for coffee in a village afterwards, have lunch somewhere nearby and continue exploring without having to organise your whole day around bus timetables.

And that is really the appeal of going beyond Knossos.

You are not simply ticking another archaeological site off a list. You can see how the ancient places fit into the landscape around them — olive groves, villages, hills, vineyards and the coast.

Crete’s ancient history is much bigger than Knossos. Once you start looking beyond the famous palace, some of the quieter places can actually make the story feel more complete.

Continue Exploring Crete

Knossos Palace: Is It Worth Visiting?
