It is beautiful, but there’s a small mistake many first-time visitors make: they see the harbour, take a few photos and think they’ve seen Chania.

You really haven’t.

The best part of the city starts when you leave the waterfront and begin wandering through the streets behind it.

Start at the Venetian Harbour

The Venetian Harbour is the obvious place to begin, and for once, the obvious choice is absolutely worth making.

The harbour dates back to the Venetian period and remains the centre of Chania’s historic waterfront. Today you’ll find cafés, restaurants and old buildings along the promenade, with the Egyptian Lighthouse standing at the end of the breakwater.

Don’t rush this part.

Walk from the western side of the harbour towards the lighthouse, then turn around and look back towards the Old Town. The view is completely different from the one you get while walking in the opposite direction.

You can also continue towards the eastern side of the harbour and the Koum Kapi area if you feel like extending the walk.

Then Get Lost in the Old Town

This is where we’d suggest putting the phone away for a little while.

Chania’s historic centre is made up of several neighbourhoods, including Topanas, Splantzia, Ovraiki and Kasteli, each with its own character.

You don’t need a perfect walking route.

Turn down a narrow street. Follow the sound of people talking. Stop when you find a little square that looks interesting.

The streets immediately behind the harbour can be busy, especially during the summer evenings. Walk a few minutes further and you’ll often find quieter corners, old houses covered with bougainvillea and small streets where the atmosphere feels much more relaxed.

That’s the Chania we like most.

Don’t Try to Drive Through the Old Town

This is one of those things that seems obvious after you’ve been there once.

Chania’s historic centre is made for walking. Some streets are narrow, busy or unsuitable for normal car access, so trying to get as close as possible to the harbour isn’t worth the frustration.

Park outside the Old Town and walk in.

The Municipality of Chania operates several parking areas around the city, including parking at Talo Square near the Venetian Harbour and the large Kydon indoor car park on Peridou Street. There are also peripheral Park & Ride areas with connections into the city.

Parking availability changes throughout the day, particularly in summer, so don’t build your entire plan around finding a space right next to the harbour.

A ten-minute walk is much better than driving around in circles looking for one.

A Small Driving Tip

If you’re arriving by rental car from outside Chania, give yourself some patience for the final part of the drive.

The city becomes noticeably busier as you approach the centre, especially during the evening when people start heading towards the Old Town for dinner.

Our advice is simple:

Choose your parking area before you enter the centre.

Once you’ve parked, forget about the car for a few hours.

You’ll see much more on foot anyway.

Where Should You Eat?

The harbour has plenty of restaurants and tavernas, and sitting beside the water is certainly part of the Chania experience.

But you don’t have to eat directly on the waterfront.

Walk a few streets into the Old Town and look around before choosing a table. You’ll find traditional tavernas alongside newer restaurants, cafés and small places tucked into the historic streets.

If you want something that feels a little more local, Splantzia is worth exploring. The neighbourhood around its square has a different atmosphere from the busiest parts of the harbour and is a nice place to stop for food or a drink.

And don’t worry too much about finding the “perfect” restaurant before you arrive.

Sometimes the table you notice while wandering around turns out to be the best choice.

Save the Sunset for the Harbour

Chania is one of those places where sunset feels like part of the daily routine.

As the light changes, the harbour buildings take on warmer colours and the White Mountains behind the city can become particularly striking.

The breakwater towards the lighthouse gives you a wide view back towards the Old Town and harbour. You don’t have to find a rooftop bar or book somewhere special.

Just walk.

Find a spot along the waterfront, slow down and watch the city change as the sun goes down. The official tourism guide also highlights the harbour and breakwater for their panoramic views across the Old Town and towards the mountains.

Want a Beach Without Leaving Chania?

You don’t have to drive across the region to find the sea.

Nea Chora is just west of the Old Town and is an easy option if you’d like to combine a city visit with a swim. It also has several fish tavernas along the waterfront.

For something a little further out, the beaches around Agioi Apostoloi are another option.

This is one of the reasons having a car can be useful when visiting Chania. You can spend the morning exploring the Old Town, take a swim in the afternoon and still return to the harbour for dinner.

You don’t have to choose between city and beach.

How Much Time Do You Need?

For a first visit, we’d give Chania at least half a day.

Three or four hours is enough for a walk around the Old Town and harbour, but a full afternoon and evening feels much better.

Arrive before the busiest evening hours.

Explore the streets.

Have lunch or coffee.

Take a break.

Return to the harbour for sunset.

Then stay for dinner.

That’s a much nicer way to experience Chania than trying to race through a checklist of attractions.

A Few Things We’d Do Differently on a First Visit

Don’t spend the entire afternoon beside the harbour.

It’s beautiful, but the streets behind it are where you’ll find much of the Old Town’s character.

Don’t drive around looking for the closest parking space.

Park once and walk.

Don’t plan every street you’ll visit.

Leave some room for getting slightly lost.

Don’t rush away after sunset.

Chania becomes a different place once the lights come on.

And finally, don’t worry if you don’t manage to see everything.

Chania is a city that rewards wandering more than ticking boxes.

Chania Is More Than the Postcard

The Venetian Harbour is probably what you’ll remember from the first photos you saw of Chania.

But the city is much more interesting when you step away from the postcard.

A quiet street.

A table in a small square.

A swim after a hot afternoon.

A glass of wine while the harbour lights come on.

Those are the moments that make a first visit feel like a real visit rather than another stop on a list.

And if you’re exploring Crete by car, Chania is also a good reminder that sometimes the best way to see a city is to park the car and forget about it for a few hours.

Continue Exploring Crete

Planning more days around the island?

You may also enjoy:

Arriving to Chania Airport?
