For your final beach day, we\u2019d skip the busiest stretches of the north coast and drive towards southern Crete<\/strong> instead. The scenery changes dramatically as you cross the mountains: olive groves give way to rocky valleys, the air feels drier, and the pace becomes noticeably slower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Option 1: Kommos Beach<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

About 1 hour 15 minutes from Heraklion<\/strong>, Kommos is one of the easiest southern beaches to reach. It\u2019s long, spacious, and usually feels less crowded than the popular resorts on the north coast. Archanes<\/strong> is only about 20\u201325 minutes from Heraklion<\/strong>, but it feels much more like a traditional Cretan town than a tourist resort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arrive in the morning while the streets are still quiet. Wander through the narrow lanes, look at the colourful houses, stop for a coffee in the square, and browse the small local shops. There\u2019s no need for a strict plan here; the village itself is the attraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Afternoon: Knossos at the Right Time<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many people visit Knossos Palace<\/strong> early in the morning, which is exactly when the organised tour groups tend to arrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a more relaxed experience, we\u2019d go later in the afternoon<\/strong> instead. The light is softer, the temperature is usually more comfortable, and parking is often easier than during the morning rush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Give yourself about 1.5 to 2 hours<\/strong> to explore the site properly. Don\u2019t rush from one photo spot to the next; take a little time to understand what you\u2019re looking at. It makes a surprising difference to the experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
