You’ve packed the beach bag, picked a destination and set off looking forward to a relaxing day by the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then you arrive to find big waves, flying umbrellas and swimmers standing on the shore wondering if it’s worth getting in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If this happens during your holiday, don’t worry. It doesn’t mean you’ve picked the wrong beach\u2014it usually means you’ve picked the wrong side of the island for that day’s wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During summer, the Meltemi<\/strong>, a strong northerly wind, is common in Crete. While it can make many beaches on the north coast rough, there are plenty of sheltered spots where the sea stays surprisingly calm. Finding calm beaches in Crete can be surprisingly easy when you know how the wind affects the island. If the north wind is blowing, you may simply be on the wrong side of the island for that day’s weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Does the North Wind Affect Some Beaches More Than Others?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Crete stretches from west to east, with very different coastlines on each side of the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the wind blows from the north, beaches facing that direction receive the full force of the waves. South-facing beaches, protected by mountains and the island itself, are often much calmer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s why two beaches less than an hour apart can feel like they’re on different islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Part of the adventure is getting there. After parking, you’ll follow a scenic walk through a dramatic gorge before reaching a small pebble beach with crystal-clear water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On windy days in the north, Agiofarago often feels completely different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A local tip: Bring water and comfortable shoes. There are no beach bars here, and that’s part of its charm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lentas<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lentas is one of those places that immediately feels slower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sheltered bay is often much calmer when northern beaches are rough, and the village itself is a lovely place to spend a relaxed afternoon after swimming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kali Limenes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite being less famous than many north coast beaches, Kali Limenes is a reliable choice when the Meltemi is strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bay is naturally protected, making it popular with visitors looking for calmer water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kommos Beach<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Distance from Heraklion:<\/strong> ~65 km
Driving time:<\/strong> Around 1 hour 15 minutes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kommos is larger and more open than the previous beaches, but depending on the day’s conditions it can still be a much better option than the north coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s also one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in southern Crete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Absolutely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A quick look at the forecast before breakfast can save you hours of driving and help you choose the right beach for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many locals decide where to swim based on the wind rather than sticking to a fixed plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having a car makes that flexibility easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the best things about exploring Crete by car is that you don’t have to commit to one destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the north coast is rough, head south.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the wind drops tomorrow, you can return to the beaches closer to Heraklion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the best beach isn’t the one you planned yesterday\u2014it’s the one that suits today’s weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
